pushing to the half-way point...weeks 7, 8, 9

The end of January brought an added challenge to the training schedule. I took on a long-term sub position in a first grade classroom for a few weeks, so getting my runs in took some finesse. But I'm happy to report that I didn't miss a single training session despite the additional commitment! Pushing forward!!!

Week 7: I Started off the week with 6 miles on the treadmill. When the real feel is -19 degrees you run on the treadmill! Swapped my Tuesday run to Monday because we had the day off from school for Martin Luther King, Jr. day. Glad I got to try out the new tank top that I scored from Old Navy for $3! It's the little things - runners, I know you feel me on this one! Thursday's 3 miles was also a treadmill run. But I was happy to get outside for Saturday's long run of 12 miles. Got to celebrate the accomplishment at my favorite local restaurant with my favorite people!
Week 8: Super tough week for getting those runs in. Managed to get another 6-mile and 3-mile run in on the treadmill- ugh....so sick of the treadmill. I did get to wear my new 261 Fearless Team Boston 2019 shirt though- something I didn't think i would get to do outside for a while- but living in New England keeps you on your weather toes! I got 13 miles in OUTSIDE in my  t-shirt just a few days later!!! My legs felt heavy but the miles were done...I'm calling it a win.

Week 9: Every single run this week was outside!!! The weather was cold, then warm, and then back to cold...again, New England. Got to run a few miles with my husband on Friday! Haven't done that since my first training run for Boston. My 10-mile run on Sunday felt amazing- which makes me feel hopeful that these legs will be able to make it the 26.2 miles when I need them to. My secret weapon is listening to the RISE podcast with Rachel Hollis. She is so motivating and inspirational which is exactly what I need to hear while I run.

Snow is coming so week 10 miles may be a bit challenging but it won't keep me down! Mileage gets real over the next three weeks, too... 15 and 16 mile long runs. If anyone wants to bring me donuts for the post run refuel, glazed are my favorite. :)

Weeks 4, 5, and 6 are officially in the books! I have to say, I've been lucky as far as the weather in concerned. There definitely have been chilly days but I'm thankful the snow has held off...until today. Fundraising for 261 Fearless, Inc is going great thanks to all of your support! I'm so grateful for each and every one of you!

Week 4: Week 4's first run happened to fall on New Year's Day so the whole family took to the streets for the Millenium Mile run. I needed 4 miles that day so I ran 3 miles on the treadmill before we headed out to the race. I swapped my weekend long run to the middle of the week since the kids' basketball schedule has kept us busy. 9 lovely miles through the neighborhood hills was just what my soul needed. I finished up the week with 3 miles with a new running friend who is just getting into the running game and crushing it!

Week 5: Week 5 started with some miles on the treadmill. Those were some emotional miles. I watched an inspirational documentary titled, The Human Race, while I ran. One of the stars was the one and only, Kathrine Switzer. I was definitely wiping my eyes multiple times throughout the run. Again, I swapped my long run to the middle of the week, but with a sick kiddo home from school, those 10 miles were also completed on the treadmill. Rachel Hollis' Rise podcast helped get me through that run. Finished up the week with a short run in 4 degree weather. I didn't care how cold it was outside...I'd been stuck inside all week and desperately needed the fresh air miles.
Week 6: You know it's cold when the water in your hydration pack tube freezes while on your 5-mile run. Got a good tip to wrap it in aluminum foil and I'm happy to say that worked later in the week on my 7-mile run. I'll briefly mention my short run on Thursday only to say that my legs felt heavy and those 3 miles felt like 13.  Sunday brought Winter. The next few weeks will be a new kind of challenge.

The Training begins...weeks 1-3

I have officially completed my first three weeks of marathon training! That's something I never thought I'd say! But I'm happy to report that despite the Christmas concerts, Santa breakfasts, holiday shopping, gingerbread house making, Saturday basketball games, and one sick kiddo, I completed every one of my training runs. Yes, even the 4 mile run on Christmas! I'm so grateful for everyone's donations and support!

Week 1: My first run was a chilly but sunny Tuesday afternoon and my wonderfully supportive husband joined me for those first three miles. At 6ft tall, his stride is much longer and his pace is much faster than mine, but he jogged alongside me on that memorable run, as he's done many times before. Hearts and flowers for that man! Thursday's miles were done on the treadmill since my daughter was home sick from school. I started watching a new show, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and it definitely helped the miles pass quickly. Saturday's long run (6 miles) started on the treadmill but ended with one of my favorite races to date- Tito's Ugly Sweater 4-Miler. The weather for December in New Hampshire was phenomenal and the running company couldn't be beat!

Week 2: It may have been 11 degrees and the wind may have been whipping at 13 mph but my BRFs (Best Running Friends) and I  bundled up and braved the elements for a Christmas lights run around the neighborhood. That run also checked off our "I Just Like to Run, Running's My Favorite" virtual run, so we sported our medals while we exchanged gifts! Thursday's run was a treadmill run, made bearable by my new "fearless" tank top that I got from my Secret Santa on Tuesday night! And Saturday's long run (7 miles) was my first solo run outside in a long time. Running solo has always been a mental struggle for me but these 7 miles felt amazing! Plus, it was 53 degrees outside and I got to run in a t-shirt!
Week 3: Christmas Day called for 4 miles, so after opening gifts I popped the ham in the oven, pulled on the new running socks Santa brought me, and checked those miles off the list on the treadmill. With the kids home on break from school, Thursday's miles were also treadmill miles. I'm not ashamed to admit that General Hospital has long been a guilty pleasure of mine, so catching up on missed episodes helped get me through these two runs. :) I finally got back outside for Saturday's long run (5 miles) with one of my BRFs who is training for the Disney Marathon in January. She's winding down her training while I'm ramping up. It was a little icy on the roads but we got the miles in.

The Journey Begins

PictureSigning the contract for HER FEARLESS RUN
When I started running a few years ago... And then had the idea to write a picture book biography about Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon with official race numbers... Even when I signed the contract for that book with my publisher, Page Street Kids -- I had no idea I would end up where I am today... an official runner for the 261 Fearless charity team for the 2019 Boston Marathon.

Sure, I joked about it a few times. ("Haha, I guess I have to run Boston now.") But in my mind I was terrified of the thought of running a marathon. Which seems ridiculous because I wrote a book about this insanely courageous woman who has devoted her life to giving women like me the opportunity to run that crazy distance any time we want.

The more I thought about that, the more I wanted to do it. The more I felt I had to do it. And then, I started to believe I could do it.

And so, my journey to that finish line on Boylston Street begins. Bring on the early morning training runs with my Best Running Friends (BRFs), under the stars because the sun has yet to show itself for the day. Bring on the New England winter that will try its best to deter me from my goal. And bring on the glory. The glory that comes with doing hard things...I'm ready.

If you'd like to support my run, I'd be extremely grateful. I'm raising money for Kathrine Switzer's non-profit organization, 261 Fearless. Visit my fundraising page for more information.
